Lady Hornets key second half rally for win at Liberty

The Wellsboro Lady Hornets scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to key a second half rally for a 58-47 NTL West win over Liberty.

"It wasn't pretty, but it was a win and we'll take it," said head coach Mary Grab. "Liberty, as usual, was tough competition on their home court. They were quick and worked well on defense to force us into a different type of game than we like to play and had us on the ropes for a while.

"The girls regained their composure late in the third and during the fourth quarter and we were able to turn the game in our favor. I'm proud of how the girls responded," concluded Grab.

Senior Guard Mackenzie Marple led the team with 21 points on the night, giving her 289 for the season and 869 for her career. Marple is now 131 points shy of 1,000 career points and needs to average 26.2 points in the 5 final regular season games to reach the mark.

If she can, she will join her sister Alex Marple as the only sister duo in team history to reach 1,000 career points.

Freshman Sarah Ingerick pitched in 11 points, Senior Hannah Zuchowski had 7, Senior Kiana Acorn had 6 points, Freshman Jada Jackson and Senior Kimberly Acorn both finished with 5 points, Junior Maggie Smith had two points, and Sophomore Jordan Butters had one point to round out the scoring for the Lady Hornets.

In the JV game, the Lady Hornets topped Liberty 40-23 for their 15th straight win of the season.

With the win, the Lady Hornets improve their 2012-13 season record to 8-9 (5-1 NTL West). The team will be back in action on Tuesday, January 29 as they host Mansfield.
