Hornet boys outlast Jersey Shore

The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team picked up their first win of 2015 with a 57-48 win over Jersey Shore on Monday, December 7.

The game started out back-and-forth as both teams hit three pointers. The Bulldogs tied the score at 6-6 then outscored the Hornets 7-6 to take a 13-12 lead after the first quarter. Wellsboro went on a 17-8 run in the second quarter to lead 29-21 at halftime, and outscored the visitors 17-6 in the third to take a commanding 46-27 lead heading into the final frame.

Jersey Shore regrouped in the fourth quarter and outscored Wellsboro 21-11 to make the score close. Wellsboro held on for the win as they went 7-for-11 in the quarter, and 14-for-22 in the game, for the non-league win.

Sophomore Dalton Prough led was the game's leading scorer, and led four Hornets in double figures, with 16 points and 6 blocked shots. Junior Jacob Singer scored 15 points, including 5-for-6 night at the foul line, for his second double figure game of the year. Sophomore Quinn Henry finished with 14 points, senior Dawson Prough had 10, and junior Brandon Lamphier pitched in with two points.

"The kids responded well tonight," said head coach Todd Outman. "We didn't get the pressure tonight from Shore that we did Saturday at Neumann but we bounced back and I was very pleased with what they did."

The Hornets won the JV game 36-34 to improve to 2-0 on the year. Sophomore Collin Pietropola had 21 points to lead the team.

The Hornets even up their record at 1-1 as they start NTL play on Wednesday, December 9 as they take on Cowanesque Valley on the road.
