Middle School basketball tops Wyalusing

The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams were both victorious over Wyalusing on Monday, March 9.

The boys team weathered a slow start and won 32-14. Holden Kennedy led the way with nine points. Brandyn Tuttle scored seven, Cameron Tennis had six, Andrew Brelo had four, and Bergen Weiner and Taynton Repard each scored two points. Tuttle also had five steals and eight rebounds on the night.

"The boys struggled to move the ball effectively against their 2-3 zone in the first half," said head coach Ed Hamm. "I was happy to see the boys find the holes in the zone the second half. Next game we need to try to put together a complete game. We can no longer wait until the second half to play hard on every possession."

The girls team also got past a low-scoring first half to win 24-20. The game was tied 2-2 at the end of the first. Wellsboro led 12-6 at the half and 20-8 at the end of the third quarter. In the final frame, Wellsboro had some foul trouble and Wyalusing was awarded 15 free throws to Wellsboro's three for the game. Wyalusing cut the lead to 22-20, but Julia Smith found a wide open Heidi Zuchowski on the opposite block to close out the scoring in the last minute.

Cathryn Brought and Julia Smith had 8 points each and Emma Poirier, Dani Hunt, Jaime Palmer, and Heidi Zuchowski each added 2 points.

"I was very pleased with how our girls played tonight despite some things not going our way," said head coach Darrell Morris. "We ran our offense fairly well, but we didn't make many shots. After the tournament on Saturday, we really emphasized that the girls need to do a better job rebounding and tracking down the ball. Our girls pulled down 33 rebounds for the game and got after the ball pretty well. We also just went undefeated against the NTL East this year, and I think that says a lot about these young girls and where they are headed."

The wins improve the boys' record to 5-4, while the girls improve to 12-4. Both teams will be back in action on Friday, March 13 as they travel to Williamson.
