The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams started March with wins over Williamson on Tuesday, March 1.

Girls - Wellsboro 30, Williamson 8

Following their first loss of the season last week to Northeast Bradford, the young Lady Hornets rebounded to improve to 11-1. Wellsboro led 12-2 after the first quarter, 22-4 at halftime, and 22-8 after the third. Cathryn Brought had 8 points, Jaime Palmer scored 6 points, Liza Manning had 4 points, and Emma Palmer, Jena Boyce, Chelsea Morris, Lauren Singer, Nina Coolidge, and Kayla Member all finished 2 points each.

"Our girls got off to a fast start and did a good job running our fast break," said head coach Darrell Morris. "We were a little sloppy with the ball a few times, but we did shoot the ball a little better and had our lowest turnover total of the season."

The B team also won 16-3 on the night. Bailey Monks had 8 points, Faith Avery had 4 points, and Kiyah Boyce and Breighanna Kemp had 2 points each.

Boys - Wellsboro 36, Williamson 28

Only three players scored for Wellsboro on the night, but two of the three were in double figures to help the Hornets improve to 9-3 on the year. Joseph Grab and Billy Lechler scored 14 and 16 points, respectively and Carson Davis scored the remaining six.

The Hornets led 12-6 after the first quarter, and 19-13 at the half. Williamson then outscored Wellsboro 9-7 to trail 26-22, but Wellsboro edged the Warriors 10-6 in the final frame for the win.

"We came out aggressive in the first qt and had some mental breakdowns defensively in the second and third quarters to let them back in the game," said head coach Jason Greenfield. "The fourth quarter we executed great with our plays and held on to win. We definitely need to have more than three guys scoring to be a successful team. It was an ugly win, but it was a win."

The B team won a close 17-9 game behind 10 points from Alex Burrell.

Both teams will be back in action this week. The girls travel to Liberty on Thursdday, March 3 and the boys play in Liberty Friday, March 4.
