The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams continued their win streaks as they both beat Cowanesque Valley on Tuesday, February 9.

Boys - Wellsboro 22, CV 19

The boys team struggled but held on for their third win of the season. The Hornets trailed 5-2 after a sluggish first quarter, but outscored CV 8-2 in the second and third quarters to pull ahead. Both teams scored 12 points each in the fourth as the Hornes clung to their four point lead.

"We struggled on offense against the zone, but I thought we played great defending the pick and rolls," said head coach Jason Greenfield. "Our big guys played great and Billy Lechler had a huge game defensively."

Joseph Grab led the Hornets with 10 points and Lechler finished the night with six.

The B team won 20-12 behind nine points from Nathan Heath and three from Will Poirier.

Girls - Wellsboro 44, CV 8

The Lady Hornets outscored CV 11-2 after the first quarter and stretched the lead to 25-2 at halftime. Wellsboro then went on to outscore CV 19-6 in the second half for the win. Cathryn Brought had 15 points, four rebounds, five steals, and one assist, Jaime Palmer had 12 points, three rebounds, two steals, and Breighanna Kemp and Kayla Mengee had four points each.

Jena Boyce, Nina Coolidge, Georgia Macensky and Lauren Singer had two points each, Chelsea Morris had one point and two steals, and Emma Palmer had one rebound, three steals, and an assist.

"Our girls played a great game," said head coach Darrell Morris. "Our defense was outstanding, we shot the ball much better, we passed the ball well, and every girl contributed. I would say that every girl on our team played better than they did in the previous game."

In the B game, the Lady Hornets won 34-8. Alex Chilson led the way with 12 points, while Kiyah Boyce and Bailey Monks scored four points each.

Both teams are now 3-0 on the year and will be back in action on Thursday, February 11 when they host Williamson.
