A career-high 20 points by junior Cathryn Brought propelled the Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team to a 43-37 win over Athens on Friday, January 25.

"During our pregame, we talked about what it meant to be Tough," coach Maureen Poirier said. "TOUGH players play no matter what. They play through fouls, through fatigue, through bad calls and through hard times. Tonight the girls played TOUGH and beat Athens on the road. I'm super proud of the girls tonight!"

Trailing 8-5 after the first quarter the Lady Hornets went on a 14-8 run before the half to lead 19-16, with Brought scoring 10 of the points. Wellsboro held the Lady Wildcats to just three field goals in the third quarter and held them to just 9 points total, while they scored 12 of their own to extend their lead to 31-25 to start the fourth quarter.

Over the course of the final 8 minutes both teams scored 12 points each to keep the spread at six points, and giving Wellsboro the win to pull within a game of .500.

Brought's 20 points led the Lady Hornets and was also a game-high. Senior Emma Poirier was also in double figures with 10 points, sophomore Jena Boyce scored 6, junior Liza Manning added 4, and senior Heidi Zuchowski finished with 3.

Kayleigh Miller led Athens with 15 (all three-pointers).

Athens won the JV game 24-18 to drop Wellsboro to fall to 5-7 overall. Lindsey Marmara had 8 points.

The win in the Varsity game improves the Lady Hornets to 7-8 overall and 7-3 in the NTL Large School Division standings. Next up for Wellsboro is a road game at Troy on Monday, January 28.
